We’re Now Ready to Burn: Why Love Logs’ Kiln Dried Firewood Has Always Met the Standard

We've got some news! All Love Logs firewood and kindling is now officially certified with the Ready to Burn scheme.

Now, you might be aware of us talking about selling Ready to Burn logs before, so we're going to explain a bit more about the scheme and why, although we've always sold Ready to Burn firewood, why we've only now got the certification.

What is the Ready to Burn scheme?

Ready to Burn is a government-backed firewood certification scheme run by HETAS and Woodsure, on behalf of DEFRA.

The theory of the Ready to Burn scheme is to make it easier for consumers to identify firewood that will burn easily and cleaner, with less smoke and harmful emissions, making it easier for the user and better for the environment. There are multiple benefits of using higher quality logs in your wood burner or fireplace.

What are the benefits of using Ready to Burn Firewood?

  • Easy to light, low smoke
  • More efficient burning = more heat
  • Significantly less particulate emissions
  • Cleaner appliance & chimney

In short, there's no doubt that wood that meets the specifications of the Ready to Burn scheme is better for you to use, better for your wood burning appliance and better for the environment.

As you know, we pride ourselves on running a completely transparent business, with no smoke & mirrors like often found in the industry. So, we thought we'd also tell you a bit more about why we've only recently signed up to the scheme.

Why haven't Love Logs been Ready to Burn previously?

The scheme was launched to regulate the industry and force firewood suppliers to meet certain standards - and despite not being certified Ready to Burn until now, we've exceeded the standards of the scheme since our launch in 2020.

In fact, from the first box of logs we've sold to the day we became certified, all of our logs have come from Ready to Burn certified producers! We've preferred to let our product and service quality do the talking - and you only have to look at our reviews to know that we do firewood properly.

Additionally, part of the scheme is agreeing to display the Ready to Burn logo on your packaging, which is another cost burden - each box or bag we use would need a new print tool, which is a big capital investment for a business of our size.

So, our stance has always been, why spend a huge amount of money on a certification, and everything that comes with it, when we're already selling products that exceed the standards of the scheme?

Why have Love Logs joined Ready to Burn now?

There are a few reasons why we decided that now was the time to get certified.

First and foremost, as the scheme has become more recognised, we felt like it was becoming more likely that not having a certification could harm our business - with new and existing customers perhaps wrongly assuming our wood isn't dry enough, if they didn't see the certification on our website or our packaging.

Secondly, we're fortunate now to be selling our products in several retailers - including a brand new product we're launching in garden centres this year. The Ready to Burn scheme does in theory have the power to penalise suppliers who haven't joined, something we've risked ignoring over the years, but when working with resellers this risk becomes theirs - and we aren't willing to ask our retail customers to take risks like that on our behalf.

Finally, as you'll see over the coming months, we've recently been busy developing the next generation of the Love Logs brand, which will lead us to an overhaul of all of our packaging - so now is the right time to get our packaging perfect, with our own Ready to Burn logo making up part of all our new designs.

I'm an existing customer, what does this mean for me?

Sorry it's a little boring, but the truth here is absolutely nothing - if we weren't sharing this blog, you wouldn't even notice. We're shipping the same lovely, kiln-dried British logs we always have!

Our wood is still, and always has been, certified at less than 20% moisture content as per the requirements of the Ready to Burn scheme. In fact, the lab tests run by Ready to Burn returned an average moisture content of 13-14% for all of our firewood and kindling.

Ready to Burn doesn't certify the source of timber, as this is part of a bigger scheme run by Woodsure - and despite not being part of that scheme, we remain committed to sourcing sustainable British wood, supporting jobs in UK timber production, ensuring low road miles and therefore low transport emissions.

So what's next for Love Logs?

First of all, it's business as usual - getting the highest quality certified Ready to Burn logs and kindling to our customers houses, as quickly and reliably as we can... just like we've always done!

As I write this blog, log burner season is in full swing and we're ready with more stock at this point of the year than ever before, so we're looking forward to keeping more of you toasty this season than ever before.

In the coming weeks we're launching a trial in two Blue Diamond Garden Centres with Ready to Burn logs in paper sacks - something we think is a first for UK retail, eliminating more horrible plastic nets and bags from the firewood supply chain. We'll also trial selling them by the pallet, so if you want to buy more of your favourite logs at wholesale prices, watch this space!

And over the coming weeks and months we'll start rolling out our new brand identity - it's an evolution rather than a revolution, but we're super excited about it and can't wait to share it with you all!

Love Logs is now a fully certified Ready to Burn supplier, but still selling the same high quality logs and kindling you've been buying for the last five years.
